Travelling with pets on Virgin Australia
Information for Virgin Australia passengers travelling with pets
Adelaide Airport will participate in Virgin Australia’s Pets in Cabin trial from 23 June 2026.
During the trial, eligible cats and dogs booked on an approved Virgin Australia pet-friendly flight will be permitted to travel through Adelaide Airport in line with Virgin Australia’s requirements and Adelaide Airport’s Pets in Cabin Conditions of Entry.
For booking information, eligibility and airline requirements, please visit the Virgin Australia Pets in Cabin webpage or contact Virgin Australia directly.
Passengers travelling with a pet must also read and comply with Adelaide Airport’s Pets in Cabin Conditions of Entry
At the airport
Before entering the terminal
Before entering the terminal, pets should be taken to the designated animal relief area outside the terminal.
Pets must be secured in their approved airline carrier before entering the terminal and must remain in their carrier at all times, unless using an animal relief area.
When outside the carrier in an animal relief area, pets must be restrained with a collar or harness and lead.
Owners, or the person travelling with the pet, are responsible for cleaning up after their pet and disposing of waste in the animal relief area bins. General waste bins must not be used.
Inside the terminal
To help keep the airport safe and comfortable for all travellers:
- Pets must remain in their carrier at all times unless using an animal relief area.
- Pet carriers must not be left unattended.
- Pet carriers must remain on the floor and must not be placed on seats in the departure lounge or at the boarding gate.
- Pets are not permitted in food and beverage areas, including lounges.
- Pets may not be permitted inside retail stores. Retailers may refuse entry at their discretion.
- Pets are not permitted in the sensory room.
- Pets are not permitted on escalators. Please use the lifts.
- Assistance animals must be given priority at all times.
Adelaide Airport may refuse entry to or remove any pet that poses a safety risk, causes a nuisance or does not comply with the Adelaide Airport Pets in Cabins Conditions of Entry
Security screening
Passengers travelling with pets must follow all directions from airport and security screening staff.
For screening, pets may need to be removed from their carrier and placed on a leash. Once screening is complete, pets must be returned to their carrier immediately.
Assistance animals have priority at security screening.
Boarding and arriving
Pets must remain in their carrier while boarding and disembarking the aircraft.
Passengers travelling with pets must board and disembark via the aerobridge only. Pets must not enter the tarmac unless directed by Adelaide Airport or airline staff.
When arriving at Adelaide Airport, pets must remain in their carrier until they are outside the terminal building.
Assistance animals
There are no changes for passengers travelling with approved assistance animals.
Assistance animals continue to have priority at security screening and animal relief areas. This applies to both departing and arriving passengers.
