Try Before You Fly is a free, hands-on practice experience designed to help people feel more confident and prepared for air travel. As an Australian first, this unique program has already supported over 150 participants since launching. It is proudly co-funded and delivered by Adelaide Airport and Virgin Australia, demonstrating our shared commitment to inclusive, people-first travel. Together, we’re creating a more accessible airport experience for everyone.

Whether you’re:

  • a first-time flyer,
  • a nervous traveller or someone with flight anxiety,
  • or a person with disability, health conditions, or access needs this event is for you.

We welcome anyone who might benefit from becoming more familiar with the airport environment and the flying process before taking a real flight.

Who is it for?

Try Before You Fly is designed for:

  • People with disabilities or health conditions
  • Autistic and neurodivergent travelers
  • People with anxiety, panic disorders or fear of flying
  • Families, friends, and support people
  • Anyone who finds unfamiliar environments overwhelming or stressful

You do not need to be an NDIS participant or have a formal diagnosis to take part.

What does it involve?

During a Try Before You Fly session, you’ll be supported to go through the key stages of the airport journey — just like on a real flight.

The session includes:

  • Practising check-in at a real airline counter
  • Going through real security screening with guidance
  • Walking to the gate and boarding a real aircraft
  • Sitting in the cabin and hearing announcements
  • Asking questions and talking through any worries with airport and airline staff
  • Support from trained volunteers.

This is not a real flight — the plane stays on the ground — but everything else is designed to feel as real as possible, in a calm and supportive environment.

Why participate?

Try Before You Fly can help you:

  • Feel less anxious about flying
  • Build independence and confidence
  • Practise travel skills in a low-pressure setting
  • Learn how to ask for support from your airline and the airport
  • Know what to expect on the day of your real flight
